Disk Galaxy Formation, Fluid Mechanics and Alchemy

by Iulia Millesima

A fluid is a substance that deforms continuously when subjected to stresses. The formation of galaxies and stars is exposed to the same laws. And Alchemy might too.

Fluids surround us and are particularly well suited to deliver and distribute the chemicals essential to life. This continuous deformation under stress constitutes a flow and pertains not only, particularly, to those matters bearing a resemblance to it,  oceans and atmosphere,  but also to astronomical “molecules”. Then again, could a non-molecular,  like our Secre Fire, be affected too?

Density, Viscosity, Pressure, Reynold Number (the ratio between inertial and viscous forces) with the consequent division in laminar or turbulent flows. The path a fluid element traces out in space is called a pathline. The pathline is called streamline for steady non-fluctuating flows, where a pathline is followed continuously by several fluid elements. Concerning mathematics, whereas heat and mass are scalars, fluid mechanics concerns the transport of momentum, which is a vector. Heat and mass fluxes are vectors; momentum flux is a tensor.

Consequently, the mathematical description of fluid flow tends to be more abstract and subtle than heat and mass transfer. Could our Secret Fire, this ineffable substance within electronic clouds coming from the Sun and stars, Alchemy basic and foundation, be subjected to density and viscosity? The question is not inapplicable and insignificant since a not negligible part of alchemical works seems to handle similar concepts.

As a matter of fact, and as we go, we will see how Secret Fire and alchemical works tend to behave as though fluid mechanics were involved. This concept may seem unorthodox, as it could have appeared when an astronomer, for the first time, invited scientists to consider the universe movements model as a liquid flowing model. This astronomical fluid representation of galaxies and stars’ formation is accepted.

This morning I stumbled upon the NASA photo of the day’s page to watch a simulation of a disk galaxy formation: “… after a few billion more years, however, this early galaxy collides with another, all while streams of gas from other mergers rain down on this strange and fascinating cosmic dance…”.  Pay attention to these words; they may come in useful. This article will introduce a coming series on alchemical vapors.
