The Third Work and the Last Cooking
This is the sixth page of a subseries on alchemical works as found in Baroque-era treatises preserved in libraries throughout Europe. To avoid the traditional “cryptographic” system adopted by alchemists between the 14th and 18th centuries, based on work phases not in sequential order and the repetition of the same concepts with different symbolic words, it was enough for me to simply respect the order and delve into the details of only a few fundamental symbolic words.
As in most classic Alchemy books, I will expose the didactic path, that is, the humid one. For a comparison, see also Concordances and Differences between the Humid and Dry Path.

- 6 Third Work
1 Are Third Work and Last Cooking synonymous?
No. The Third Work still has a rotation of colors, while the Last Cooking is the “hatching” with the final natural “chick exit” of the philosophical egg.
2 What is meant by the final “chick exit”?
I don’t know, I’ve never witnessed it. I can only repeat what I read: at the end of the musical octave a note should arrive that announces the higher octave. At that moment a visual phenomenon should also occur in the egg (but I have no idea what this is and what I’m saying).
3 If you have no idea what you’re saying, wouldn’t it be better to say nothing at all?
No. On the contrary, it is the opposite. Having never reached the final cooking, I can summarize what I have read about it without fear of revealing too much. Because, IMO the important thing is to give completeness to the alchemical work, and one cannot understand completeness without know the end. Only the end can reveal the true purpose.
4 Instead, Canseliet is known for having reached the maximum limits of the Last Cooking, and decided to describe it…
When I read Canseliet’s details of his Last Cooking, I mus confess I was shocked by all his revelations. Secondly, I wondered how it was possible that a human being was given the possibility of achieving such power. Only many years later I understood that it was necessary to reveal the last part of the alchemical works to explain what Alchemy really was.
5 Is there a right time for the third phase, the final cooking, also called “hatching” of the egg?
In reality there is no single right moment in the solar year, but one cannot go wrong by choosing the moments of “weakness of the sun”. So certainly the night, and certainly the moments of strength of some stars. These moments of stellar strength can be the cyclical annual weaknesses of the sun due to its winter departure or the overwhelming force of some stellar bodies, such as Orion (at night so strong as to “silence” the sun).
6 Is there a Philosophers egg for the humid path and one for the dry path?
As far as I know, the Philosophers egg is supposed to synthesize the humid and dry paths.
7 Is it true that the “stellar” moments of the Last Cooking influence above all the composition of the atmospheric air?
True. Typically, when the stars are strong and the sun is weak the air has its own peculiar consistency.
8 Yet it is said that the Last Cooking must be performed with the heat of the Sun…
In this case we have to read between the lines: obviously the intention is not to expose the material of the last Cooking to the solar heat, perhaps increased by some burning glass, but to “introduce” a symbolic Sun, a “spark” that can only come from a symbolic Sun, like gold or something else. See also Palingenesis, Seeds in the Wind, Alchemy and Modern Physics Particles, Gold & Alchemy, or Adorn with a Star Ray and Solar Alchemy.
9 The Last Cooking is often symbolized by a rooster and a hen. Should we interpret it as rooster=Sulfur and hen=Mercurius?
Yes, the rooster is a symbol of the active part of Sulfur/spark/seed/Sun while the hen of the patient passive part of Mercurius/ray/sowing ground/Moon.
10 Is there a Philosophers egg for the humid path and one for the dry path?
As far as I know, the Philosophers egg is supposed to synthesize the humid and dry paths.
11 How long should the Last Cook last?
The Last Cooking should last a week. it is in fact called the “week of weeks”.
12 They talked about a final material from the main work that should be pretty “crusty” in the wet and dry paths. What is it for?
There is talk of a crusty material to handcraft a sort of double crucible. Others speak of two real crucibles, one superimposed on the other.
13 What should happen inside the egg?
A whole series of colors should follow each other, starting from black.
14 They talk about the last putrefaction. Is it right?
As said, this species of peacock’s tail should start from blackness. As any other alchemical color rotation used to be. And will come out of the last red.
15 Can we apply the symbology called Cauda Pavonis or the peacock’s tail to this final set of colors?
In many treatises in which the peacock’s tail is mentioned, they are reticent, whether they refer to the end of the second work or the beginning of the third.
16 Does the Peacock Tail appear spontaneously?
As far as I know, the external stimulus of the addition of gold could be done to cause this particular blackness before the Cauda Pavonis show occurs.
17 Can we apply the symbology of the Regimens of Fire to this final set of colors?
When in the Baroque treatises “Regimes of Fire” are mentioned, a passage of colors is meant. Because of their reticence, of course, it is uncertain whether they refer to the end of the second work or the beginning of the third. Anyway, yes, it could be applied to the passage of colors in the philosophical egg of both paths, given that it is a matter of regulating the fire for the colors to appear.
18 Does the egg have to be completely sealed or left with a few holes?
The ancient authors are also very reticent—some speak of sealing, others of making a tiny window. However, the egg is described as closed or, at most, with a tiny hole.
19 Leaving aside the supposed sealing of the egg, what do the alchemists say about the shell?
Concerning the supposed sealing of the philosophical egg, alchemists say that the shell is naturally in contact with the surrounding air, just like an ordinary egg (see Air Alchemy).
20 Is it true that the flow and reflux of the philosophical sea is crucial to the making and hatching of the philosophical egg?
True. See Flow and Reflux. When it comes to the egg, tradition has it that the “hinges” of the oscillation movement – which are equinoctial, on the east-west axis – are to be considered above all.
21 How can we symbolically define the Egg?
The last sacrificed child ( in the philosophical sense, of course) is now turning into an embryo. Spirit and Soul, Mercurius, and Sulfur are now indissoluble.
22 What do the alchemists of the wet path suggest for making the egg?
They say the Philosophical Egg forms naturally when the matter goes no further. If we have wisely operated and left some impurities during the salts’ volatilization, the matter will now form a slight crust.
23 Are the Philosophical egg and the final oven synonymous?
Alchemists have indulged in multiple definitions: the egg is a container and oven sufficient for moderate heat, and the egg must be placed inside a real oven.
24 Does the word “Athanor” mean the oven of the last cooking?
The Athanor is an essential part of the success of the third work and is often confused with the actual oven of the last cooking and with the astronomical sun. But in reality, it is rather an alchemical oven, that is, an absolutely spiritual part capable of cooking (as we have seen, the Mercurius is capable of cooking) and an alchemical sun (that is, the Mercurius that composes the egg).
Also, there is a particular “psychic” condition of the alchemist, who, at that point of the work, must, in fact, enter into true “communion” with the matter.
25 Is there anything added to the egg for weight gain?
It is very hard to grasp whether the noli me tangere phase or “nothing can be added anymore”, refers to the end of the second work or is part of the third one.
Logic would have it that an increase in weight takes place only with the addition of further mass.
26 A philosophical Egg is said to form naturally when the matter cannot go any further.
Evidently, it refers to the previous faq. If we have wisely operated and left some impurities during the salts volatilization, for the matter to form now a slight crust, and if we know how to provide the newly crusted matter with a particular device and a special oven for the last cooking, we can be able to see the Egg.
27 What is the bewildering peculiarity of the Philosophical Egg?
Under the dramatic weight increase, the Philosophical Egg would cyclically emit sounds according to a particular musical scale. The number of different sounds must exceed seven. The lack of the eighth sound defines abortion and may cause dangerous but spectacular phenomena.
28 What explanation can be given for sounds emitted from the egg?
The sound could be produced by the increase in egg weight due to the abnormal mass contraction and, consequently, of the molecules forming it. Sound is motion, and motion is a force acting on everything and the spirit. Indeed, Spiritus can be defined as a movement.
Much more difficult, in the light of current physical and alchemical knowledge, to define where the higher octave of return comes from. I mean what alchemists call the answer of the divine. Or Cosmos.
29 What might a modern chemist deduce about the bewildering behavior of the egg?
Rather than deducing, a modern chemist might want to investigate the electronic configuration of the egg.
30 Would it be easy for a modern chemist to investigate the electronic configuration of the egg?
Investigating the electronic configuration of the egg would be an extremely complex operation. This would be mainly due to three factors: 1, a philosophical egg would have to be found first; 2, the chemical composition of Mercurius is disorienting due to the heterogeneity of the starting raw materials; 3, it seems that every attempt at chemical composition analysis has disoriented the reagents and optical readers.
31 What about the disasters caused by laboratory accidents during the third work?
Very few alchemists today can afford to face the cooking of the philosophical egg. But I could also say very few alchemists can face the final cooking today. It is enough to read Canseliet for an entire list of chemical-physical catastrophes, which is abnormal for the operation’s technical entity. At this stage, we no longer speak of explosions due to poor chemical knowledge or the fragility of tools. No, the third work borders on physics; it ends in physics. Therefore, physical phenomena can be expected nearby. However, Canseliet came to old age, and his physical troubles seem to have rather been caused by stress, anxiety, fatigue, and sleepless nights.
32 What can be said about the strange phenomena resembling aurora borealis that can occur during the Last Cooking failures?
We have already discussed this topic in Alchemy and Modern Physics Particles. Here we can only add that this magnetic failure probably concerns the failure of the “spark” to become a true “ray”. See also Palingenesis, Seeds in the Wind.
33 What is the difference between Lapis Medicinalis and Projection Powder?
Projection Powder is the first degree of ripeness before the perfect red achievement. Lapis Medicinalis is the second degree of ripeness. Projection Powder tests whether the amount of Secret Fire/Spiritus Mundi/Seed of Metals is enough for the alchemical child to evolve in Embryo. And, yes, the test consists of trying to transmute a melted metal into gold.
34 What is the difference between the Carbuncle and Lapis Medicinalis?
Carbuncle and Lapis Medicinalis are two names for the same thing.
35 Is Lapis Medicinalis intended for medical use?
Do not take for granted that Lapis Medicinalis, just because of the name, is good for medical use. Real alchemists do give a philosophical sense to “medical”. They probably mean the creation of a new body instead of the healing of the old one.
36 What is the difference between Lapis Medicinalis Microcosmi and Lapis Medicinalis Macrocosmi?
Lapis Medicinalis Microcosmi is produced from raw animal matter, such as human blood, urine, and bones, following a series of processes analogous to more generic raw matters. Lapis Medicinalis Macrocosmi is produced from more generic raw matter.
However, be aware that the reason for being of laboratory alchemy is hidden in this.
37 Is the Elixir just a laboratory product?
The Arab alchemists (since it is an Arabic word) said that the Elixir was extracted and not produced. It already existed in nature; everything that exists has a natural Elixir comparable to a lucid vapor and possesses a vital spirit. Anyway, pay attention to the meaning given to the word “nature” by the alchemists, because it could be a characteristic of the air that surrounds alchemical objects and which we find ubiquitously in any natural environment.
38 How is “Know yourself” applied to the Lapis Medicinalis Microcosmi?
In laboratory alchemy, the “know yourself” concept uses raw animal matter, which naturally and manually eventually evolves into the Lapis Medicinalis Microcosmi. Lapis Medicinalis Microcosmi should be joined with the Lapis Medicinalis Macrocosmi. The reason is uncertain because few alchemists know what they are doing. But they easily speculate about the creation of a new alchemical body.
39 Does Lapis Medicinalis Microcosmi have anything to do with DNA?
See First-Preparatory Works about DNA as a material. But, to answer the question, most likely yes: some practice involving DNA is definitely present.
40 Is Lapis Medicinalis the Philosophers Stone?
Too many consider the Lapis Medicinalis as the end of their works and the Philosophers Stone. But, as said above, the Philosophers Stone can only be the last emission of the Philosophical Egg. So even Basilius Valentinus, when claiming to hold the Philosopher’s Stone in his hand, perhaps galloped with his imagination.
41 What about phenomena involving photon/time interactions during the Last Cooking?
I have covered this extensively in Alchemy and Modern Physics Particles.
